⭐ Fiio M15s | First impressions with Fiio’s upgraded DAP

During Canjam Singapore 2023, we visited Fiio’s booth to check out their latest DAP player, the M15s. An upgraded version of the previous flagship M15, the M15s serves as a high-end DAP that offers a whole range of hardware upgrades and more added features, at the same time improving the sonic sound signature. We’ve managed to have a demo session with the M15s, and here are our thoughts.

The M15s DAC chip has been upgraded to the high-end ES9038Pro series from ESS Sabre, which provides exceptional high-resolution audio signal decoding, supporting most high-res PCM and DSD files. The SoC has been upgraded now deploying the tried and trusted Snapdragon 660SoC chip. Paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM, the DAP UI interface is significantly improved, offering a more silky lag free experience. The M15s supports high-resolution audio streaming apps like Apple Music, Tidal and are also Roon Ready.

The Fiio M15s features two-way Bluetooth connectivity, supporting high-res Bluetooth codecs such as LDAC and AptX HD. You can also connect the M15s to your phone, acting as a dedicated DAC/Amp for your phone. Headphone output wise, the M15s features both single ended and balanced outputs; 3.5mm single ended and both 2.5mm as well as 4.4mm for balanced ports. The 4.4mm output also supports balanced line-out functionality.

Taking a leaf from the Q7 and M17, the M15s also employ a dual power source mode, where if the M15S is wall powered directly, the M15s will behave like a desktop setup, offering up to 20% more output power than in battery mode. With a rated output power of 1.2W, the Fiio M15s packs quite an amount of punch, enough to drive even the most demanding IEMs. It also features a high-power headphone output mode suitable for power-hungry headphones. 

Now, onto the sound impressions of the M15s. From the brief impression we got, one thing which stood out immediately was the tuning; the M15s sound signature overall sounds smoother, more musical presentation. Details are clear and present, with a nice clean background and expansive imaging. Comparing the M15s to Fiio's M11s, the M15s sounds more solid, vocals sounding dense and fuller, with more body and definition. While the M15s bass it isn't punchiest or most rumbling bass around it's still well-tuned, clean and balances out the signature.
