Naim Audio, a British high end audio manufacturer since the 1970s, has launched their first entry in the personal audio market with the Uniti Atom Headphone Edition. Like the standard Uniti Atom, it is a wireless music streamer, with tons of connectivities such as Spotify Connect, Airplay, TIDAL, Qobuz, Roon Ready support, UPnP and even with an alarm clock built-in! Talk about multi-features.
You can stream your music from your network server, or your favourite music streaming services, or even hard drives from the USB inputs. You can access all your music files from the remote and from the mobile apps. You can forgo with your PC and relax at the seat of your choice, sit back and relax away with music at your fingertips.
The Uniti Atom Headphone Edition(abbreviated as HE), is a block of elegantly designed player, with a large colour screen that shows your favourite album arts and makes your navigation easier. The front panel also includes a 6.3mm single ended and a 4.4mm balanced output, and a USB input while the 4pin XLR headphone out is located at the rear of the panel. The sides show off the cleanly machined heatsinks and a large knob with volume indicator inset into the top, surrounded with a slate of gloss black panel. The rear IO provides ethernet connection, a USB input, Coaxial and Optical inputs, Analog inputs via RCA and preamp outputs of XLR and RCA. You can switch between preamp mode and headphone mode with a touch of the button on the upper left corner, so even if your headphone is plugged in, it will stay at preamp mode unless you turn it on.
The remote control has a white glow indicator, and the volume indicator is synchronized with the top knob. You can pretty much navigate everything on the remote control, as it also has the same gloss black design as the main unit.
So with the stage all set, what do you play it with? The answer is Focal. It complements the Focal headphones flawlessly, you can essentially plug in any Focal cans, no matter if it's Utopia, Stellia, Clear MG or the Celestee, it just sounds flawless. It brings out the unique definition, speed and utmost details that are hidden in your Focal, waiting to be unleashed. Although you can plug in the Utopia or Stellia in any DAC/AMP, it does not hit you as hard as the Naim combo, they are just...perfect. With Uniti Atom HE, the Utopia's speed and timing, detail retrieval and technical performance just hits you differently. The Stellia doesn't sound like a closed back headphone any more, you just immerse yourself with the music. It has a certain warmth and musicality in it, but does not take away any technical capabilities or performance. With the Utopia plugging in, it is just not Utopia anymore, it’s just pure enjoyment.
Even with other headphones, you can still enjoy the Naim Uniti Atom HE without any problem. With an output power of 1.5W at 16ohms, you can power pretty much most of the headphone without issue. You can even play Hifiman HE-1000SE on it and still have the power reserve in check. Overall, it doesn’t colour the music heavily, still considerably transparent sounding.
It will sit on the table, as a gorgeous looking piece of work, as well as a fully functional device along with your Focal sitting beside it.
