Shanling’s new M9 improves upon the award winning M8 DAP with overall evolution being made to bring a higher level of sound performance, premium design, and user experience to audiophiles.

It starts with the design and build. While the M9 is made of CNC milled aluminium chassis similarly to the M8, what is different now is Shanling adopting a brand-new design approach which was inspired by their 25th anniversary edition HiFi line-up. The complex wave pattern running down the sidewall of the M9 contributes not only to the premium looks but also makes the M9 one of the best devices to be held on your palm.

A large 6-inch LCD screen of high pixel density spans nearly edge to edge across the device. Shanling even added a notch display at the top center of the screen which I am not a fan favorite of but does help to display additional information of the device. The removable headphone socket of the M8 is here to stay, making the M9 feel uncluttered by unused ports.

The M9 comes out of box with Android 10 operating system, it further extends the service life of the device for future updates of 3rd party applications. Taking advantage of the operating system is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC processor flanked with 8GB of System Memory and 256GB worth of internal storage. Battery life is also excellent thanks to the built-in 8350 mAh battery which carries the M9 for up to 18 hours of continuous battery life off the single ended output.

Finally, onto the sound segment, the M9 comes initially with 500 Limited Edition units made with AKM AK4499EQ Dual DAC design. This is one of the few remaining devices that still runs with the coveted Asahi Kasei DAC chip. Sound performance wise the M9 still carries the smooth and warm sound that made the M8 adored by the community, albeit with further refinements across the full range frequency, better technicalities in terms of layering, sound separation, more immersive sound stage and imaging. The updated components on the M9 no doubt helps to churn out even more driving power of the device.
